Kieran graduated in 1986 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. During his 6 years in Med school he spent time overseas developing primary health care projects with Tibetan refugees with whom he still maintains involvement. He completed his residency and neuroradiology fellowship at University of Michigan with an interventional neuroradiology fellowship at University of Geneva. As a resident and fellow he developed transcranial colour Doppler with ultrasound contrast and dynamic gadolinium contrast enhanced MRA of the head and neck and the WE Cook Murphy Vertebroplasty system.

He led the division of interventional neuroradiology at Johns Hopkins University for several years before being recruited by University of Toronto where he is currently a Professor, Vice Chair and Deputy Chief of the Department of Medical Imaging. He also chaired the University Committee on commercialization of intellectual property, built UHNs international health care program, and serves as the Director of Clinical faculty in the Techna Research institute. He has authored over 145 peer reviewed publications, published several textbooks and mentored over 50 residents and fellows.

A serial inventor and entrepreneur, he holds over 60 patents and his devices are used around the globe more than 60,000 per year. He has started 7 companies: 1 in Canada, 2 in France, and 4 in the US.
